I Left Medicine And Started My Own Jewelry Line

Why change?

It’s a much more flexible lifestyle, I get to be creative in the designs, materials, promotional materials, the method of doing business. I get to create the whole thing just the way I want it. Not that it’s easy, but I feel very passionate about it and much more fulfilled in being able to be creative and open to many possibilities in my work. I also get to talk with lots of other very creative and inspired people in my day-to-day work, which I find motivating.

I Am Big Doer. I Hate Talking About Things. I Like To Execute

I also get the misconception that I must be like Ari Gold from Entourage. The minute I sign a client, sponsors hate me because I get my clients paid. However, for this business I am actually relatively easy to deal with and am reasonable in my asking. I want my clients working and don’t like to get caught up in fruitless negotiations. Some people won’t even give me a chance to prove this which is fine as long as my clients are happy. When I am curing cancer (there is actually a Matt Meyerson who researches at Harvard working on this as we speak) I will take my job seriously.

I Started My Own Law Firm

I was absolutely miserable working in a law firm. The funny thing is as long as I can remember all I ever wanted in a career was my own business, and when I began thinking about law school, I always imagined working in my own small law firm. The trouble was there was this thing getting in the way – my paycheck. My paycheck was probably the only thing I really liked about working at that firm. It was sort of an addiction – a fix every other Thursday. Then February 2009 happened. Law firm layoffs were everywhere in the news, and I was one of those statistics. I actually was not surprised – one of the partners with whom I shared a printer left a memo on the printer that I accidentally stapled to a pleading I was preparing (good thing I gave it a proof read before I submitted it to the Court). Knowing in advance was good. I was able to have my moment of stress ahead of time and just deal with moving on Continue reading

Black History Month Part II: Alvin Ailey

From pbs.org. Early performances of “Revelations” (1960) established Ailey’s company as the foremost dance interpreter of African-American experience. The dance quickly became the company’s signature ballet, eclipsing previous concert attempts at dancing to sacred black music. Set to a series of spirituals and gospel selections arranged by Brother John Sellers, “Revelations” depicts a spectrum of black religious worship, including richly sculpted group prayer (“I’ve Been Buked”), a ceremony of ritual baptism (“Wade in the Water”), a moment of introverted, private communion (“I Wanna Be Ready”), a duet of trust and support for a minister and devotee (“Fix Me, Jesus”), and a final, celebratory gospel exclamation, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.” Continue reading
