Amen Notes

Admission: I geek out on entrepreneurial discussion and writing contracts.

While clicking around for business and entrepreneurial sites I came across Marci Alboher and the column she used to write for the NY Times.  More searching lead me to a 2007 video with her and Tim Ferris.  The video is over 50 minutes.  I couldn’t watch it all in one sitting.  My inability watch in one sitting was not about the duration but about the fact that I was so excited about who they are and what they have to say.  I paused frequently to take “Amen” notes.  Amen, I agree with you on that topic, and on that one too.  And, “Amen” you so eloquently expressed that concept that I only began to ponder.

I was excited because I found my people. People who “get” the lifestyle I have chosen. People who live it well themselves.  Its a sense of validation.  We all want to be loved and understood, don’t we.

See the video and geek out for yourself.  Grab your notebook and a pen.

Some highlights form the video are:

Manage Time
Checking email hundreds of times per day is not productive.  Try checking twice a day at 11am and 4pm. You might discover an addiction to emailtexttwitterfacebook.

Outsource busy work
Use your time for productive tasks

Focus on the “what” instead of the “how”
This is great for learning a language and work projects. In essence forget  the theory and focus on in important tasks

It takes a lot of money to live such an exciting life
No it doesn’t.  See my post, A Map for Saturday, This is the hugest misconception.  A friend form law school called me a few months ago for a vacation recommendation.  I told him to go to Argentina.  I knew he wouldn’t spend his intended budget, even with the wine and clothes they bought. He continued to question me about the prices everything from lodging to restaurants like Cabanas Las Lilas, assuming my information was outdated. “This was the best vacation. I’m sorry I doubted you. We want to go back,” was his response when he got back.

Deferred Life Plans
Many wait until retirement to enjoy life.  Why?   Decades of silent misery to wait until you are aged to have fun…this is flawed thinking.

Ask yourself daily “are you being productive or busy?”
Write in and let me know how you are doing with this one.  I am constantly trying to work on this one.

Dilettante vs. Rennaisance person
It can be assumed that by not “sticking” to one career your life that you are unsire of flitting on a whim.  This is not true. I am highly educated. Saving for my future. Making time to live a life that is amazing and wonderful.

I’m a parent, what can i do?
Tim and Marcy explain this well.  Tim suggests that being a parent is like have a boss, there are some restrictions, but not as many as you may think.  You won’t know if you don’t ask.

Marcy notes that most new endeavors are required periods of intense focus. I add, for example, a newborn requires a lot of attention.  having a newborn and running for political office, or starting medical school might be difficult. But the child will not always ne a newborn and as the intensity changes so can your focus.

I have a future article coming in the next week on Tim Ferris.
