Only Chihuly could turn the ugly concept of glass ceiling into something beautiful.
An excerpt from the book How I Changed Careers: Glass Ceiling
A friend called me today and asked me if I thought “the glass ceiling exists?”
He is a junior exec, by duty, not title.
He works hard. Damn hard.
Excellent reputation. No performance issues. No (known) political enemies.
Recently a coworker of his quit to work at another company.
My friend stepped up and offered to take up some of the slack. For an increase in pay, of couse.
Instead he got a lecture about the economy and more work. With no increase in pay, of course.
He is upset.
Evaluating his career.
“Yes,” I responded.
“I am a minority in this country. You are too. Getting a job is one of the toughest things for me. I have a better educational and professional pedigree than most of my contemporaries. I present myself professionally. I don’t have bad breath, but people in the majority with much less skill and ability than I get jobs and get promotions.
Why do you think I started my own business?”

thought provoking…
Perfect image for this topic–love Chihuly’s work anywhere I can see it. As for the glass ceiling, it’s the story of my life. Bruised and battered, and like you, Terry, making my own way now.
Thanks for your comment Lorraine. I see this as simply a way for me to empathize and deconstruct ceilings.
