The Career Paradigm Has Changed

An excerpt from the book, How I Changed Careers : The Career Paradigm has Changed

Fortunately, we no longer live in a time when you have to have just one career.

People are becoming lawyers and authors,  academics with music careers, or even a world-class weight lifter,  who became a famous actor and ultimately Governor of California.

The paradigm has changed.

My only suggestion is, that you commit 100% to any new endeavor because if you don’t take yourself seriously why should others.  Changing careers isn’t easy and if you are not 100% committed, perhaps the jobs you feel trapped in isn’t so bad.

I wanted to have my own business.

I just wasn’t sure what it would be.

From a young age I realized that working for others was a means to gaining practical skill until I had the skill level, knowledge and confidence to do my own thing.  My parents were entrepreneurs.  Successful Entrepreneurs. A 9 to 5 job was for support staff.  When running your own business you are always responsible and always on the clock.

My parents came from public housing projects of Dallas.  They wanted more in life and worked hard for it.  That’s it.

They got up early, worked until  late and by God’s grace made it — raising three kids along the way.  I saw my parents have to drive long distances late in the evening to check on work projects and investments.

I saw the organization, time management and financial diligence they had.  Most importantly, I saw how they worked together.  A lot of people wont go the extra mile.  My parents went the extra marathon.

“…commit 100% to any new endeavor…” That, among other things, stuck a cord in me. I know I don’t want to do what I am doing forever but I also know it pays well and allows me the flexibility I need for my children. I also know what I would like to do but your suggestion reminds me that I am not fully committed yet.
