I come form a large law firm, Fortune 500 Company background but the ‘know how’ of starting my business came from simply googling for information.
I wanted to make natural body care products for friends as ChrisTmas gifts. I wasn’t plannng a business. I typed in the term “natural body care ingredients” and started looking at the search results. A company named Cranberry Lane in Canada was high on the list.
I spent $278.oo on yarrow, horsetail, vegetable glycerin, beeswax, kaolin clay, essential oil.
Then I googled yarrow, horsetail, vegetable glycerin, beeswax, kaolin clay and esential oil.
I learned about each of these things individually. How they could/should be used. And how they shold not be used…on google.
I needed bottles. I googled “cosmetic bottles”
I ordered some online. I made some mistakes with bottle materials, leakage, and quality, but I was having fun so it was worth the $50 investment.
My friend James made labels that I printed on my ink jet.
This is how I got started. From hobby to CEO. I have done the same for our bag, apparel, raw ingredient vendors.
Now, I am involved with pofessional associations where I have direct access to resources and experts. Today we work with chemists and formulators. We have established relationship with bottle manufacturers. We work directly with international vendors to source fabics.
Earning my google Ph.D was valuable in that it taught me the basics of how things are made. Texture, smells, benefits, contraindications. Now when I talk to a chemist, It is an intelligent conversation that creates a great product for my customers.
